Payne earned honorable mentioned all-metro honors by the Washington Post for his junior year performance. A good athlete, Payne also plays basketball and lacrosse at Oakton.
Coach Joe Thompson: “Keith ended up with 15 or 16 rushing touchdowns and 3 receiving touchdowns. He had about 15 receptions for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was right around 1,000 yards rushing through 12 games. As a team we probably rushed for 2800 yards, but he was the leading rusher by far for us.
“It’s so hard to explain to people in terms of stats. We try to play as many people as we can and there were lots of times when Keith was out by halftime. But he’s the reason we went as far as we did in terms of our offensive production. You knew if you’d give him 15 rushes a game he was going to go for 100 yards and he was going to score a couple touchdowns for you.”
