the fact that they have not been able to put a quality field together.
It sounds somewhat like a cover.
Some Challenger events have better entry lists.
I believe only one top 50 player (Tsonga) had committed to the
tournament and even he is questionable since he's been injured most of
the year.
It seemed like an ideal situation for Somdev, even though it probably
wasn't great for the sponsors.
Based on the original entries (only a handful of top 100 players),
Somdev would have had a great opportunity to go deep in the draw and
pick up a significant amount of points.
The thing is India's most popular sport is Cricket. In Oct., they have a
big test series with Australia (another cricket power). The first "Test" is
in Bangalore scheduled for a week after the tennis event would end.
Australia has cancelled plans to go to Pakistan "first" because of
instability there, but not Bangalore, India.
This would be something like (assuming the DC tennis event was in the
end of Sep.) the organizers of this "hypothetical" DC tennis event
cancelling the tournament because of security concerns for the
participants even though the next week there would be a Redskins
home game vs the Cowboys or Giants still scheduled to go on.
If there were major security concerns, you would think they would
cancel the larger event as well (& likely first).
