the 'Great Satan'.
That said, we're still the Great Satan to them. Nothing has really
changed. We still have troops in their holy-land. Right or wrong, that is
a major factor in their hatred for us and a new president, regardless of
who it is, is not going to erase that hatred and fundamental belief that
western civilization should and will be destroyed.
I personally don't believe AQ is happy or glad about Bush leaving office.
He has done more for their cause than Osama Bin Laden. And I don't
mean that as a political partisan job. One of AQ's goals in attacking us
on 9/11 was to bait us into a conflict in the middle east. It worked,
twice. As long as we're in Iraq or Afghanistan (again, right or wrong...
that's a different discussion) AQ will have access to all the targets they
could ever hope for. That is why they want holy war in the middle east.
Bush's strategy of 'fighting them over there instead of over here' is
exactly what AQ wanted, IMO.
Again, consider that it's a real possibility that, under Obama, we will be
sending troops to Pakistan, or at least scaling up special forces
attacks on terrorist safe-havens etc. From the viewpoint of AQ, that is
more of the same and, in their minds, it further justifies their cause. So
bottom line, I really don't see any major idealogical or tactical shifts
within AQ operations. They still hate our guts, they still want to kill us
for the same reasons they did on November 3rd.
