Subject: That job is a career killer!
Posted by: Quaker on Wed Nov 19 2008 10:47:47 PM
Message:

You inherit an unwieldy bureaucracy an impossible mandate with border security and
you're going to be blamed bigtime for terrorism that quite frankly you have almost no
chance of preventing at the Secretary level.

I would've thought Obama would try to get a Republican to bite on this one.

That being said, Napolitano is qualified. Governor speaks to her ability to mange a
bureaucracy. Border state gives her a start on working with US Customs (biggest
bureacracy in DHS and the INS (most dysfunctionaly part of DHS). Attorney
General is good for the law enforcement piece. There is a fair amount of subtlety
required to manage law enforcement and work with DOJ.

Don't know about the Coast Guard thought ... not much water in Arizona.

Seriously, Homeland Security is not a glamorous job. It pretty much destroyed Tom
Ridge's career. I am a little surprised she would take it. Its a tough, tough gig.
