had committed to UVA as part of the class of 2011, most of us probably
asked “Rhody who?” Obviously this was not a name we were familiar with. My curiosity got the best of me, so I checked some websites, contacted a couple of fans in the Denver area, and came up with this brief summary. Rhody is a junior year at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado, about 15 miles from Denver. The Regis lax program is considered a very strong program in Colorado, although not the top program. They have reached the final four a few times, but they have not won a state championship. The upcoming season will be Rhody’s first as a starter. He has been behind a senior captain and has had only a small amount of playing time between the pipes. As a sophomore he was listed at 6’ 165. Rhody is viewed as an “up and comer.” I’d say the most significant comment that I heard comes from Kyle Harrison, who was quoted as saying he is “the best goalie I have seen all year,” referring to players at the recruiting camps he had visited. For example, it is reported that Rhody did well at Jake Reed’s rising sophomore camp out West. A local fan who has seen him play says that he is very, very quick, outstanding on low shots and is an excellent outlet passer. Another Denver fan said, while not a dominant player at this point, he has the chance to be “really special.” The Denver observers were quick to point out that there is a gap between the east coast hot beds and their area. Accordingly they tried to be cautious in their comments. A quick summary would be this -- Rhody is not yet a proven talent, but he has a great deal of potential. On ESPN Rise, editor Brett Hughes, who gathered some of the above information, noted that much the same was said about Tillman Johnson. Tillman was another high school goalie who had not yet started in goal for his school when he was recruited by UVA. We know what happened with Tillman. All in all, it appears that Rhody has caught the eye of observers on the recruiting trail and Dom has landed a player who may very well develop into an excellent Division I goalie. If he and his classmate and fellow commit, defenseman Tanner Ottenbreit, play well for Virginia and enjoy their experience, perhaps the Denver area will become a good source of talent for us on an ongoing basis. |
