My son is also a HS junior and plays Regis, and I've seen them on the
summer all-star circuit. Ottenbreit played much more for Regis; Heller backed up a good senior last year. Both have made the top all-star travel team out here (used to be called Mile High, now called Denver Elite - it's run by the DU coaching staff). Ottenbreit is not on the fall Elite Team, but i think that's because he plays football. Both players supposedly did very well on the elite recruiting camp trail this summer. Dek makes a good point. These are bets on potential much more than proven talent. Ottenbreit has been all-conf his freshman and soph years, but not all-state. Heller has never started (for his high school team; he has on elite teams). No question that lax is not as deep here as Baltimore or LI, but there are quality players. That said, this is a big deal for CO lax. They send a number of D1 kids every year, but I can't remember anybody going to one of the D1 powerhouses before. I would be shocked if these two had not already received offers from Tierney at DU. HS lax is a bit different here than back east. There are 60 or so boys teams in Colorado, all in one big league (vast majority are in metro Denver and suburbs). In other words, no 5A or 4A, etc. There are 6 or 8 traditional powerhouses, and Regis is one of them. Pretty sure they have many final 4's, but no state titles. If you believe the LaxPower rankings, the top 4 or so teams each year are in the top 100 HS teams nationally, with the champ usually in the 20's or so ranking-wise. |
