Hi wahs08,
If I had extended the list to five players in each category, I would
have had Mike as #5 in the ballhandler group. I remember Mike clearly.
He was a very good ballhandler but was not a high volume goal scorer.
He was number 5 in assists all time, and led the team in assists each
of his four years at attack. His best year was 1982 when he led the
team in scoring with 55 points. This was his highest goal scoring year
with 26. Rick Guisto had a great year that year with 30 goals so Mike
was able to get free a bit more. The next year Paul French scored 28
from the attack slot so Mike was assisting more than scoring.
In 1981 and 1982, Mike was primarily a feeder, especially in 1980.
That year John Driscoll led the team in goals with 17!!! It was a very
balanced team scoring wise. Mike had 27 assists which led the ACC
(freshman). The next year there was a turnover in good players and
Mike scoring came down.
One thing to keep in mind about Ace Adams' teams, they were balanced
scoring. They did not have the high scoring averages we are accustomed
to now. The attackmen that I remember most from Adams' years are Kris
Snider for one year (his best scoring and assist year), Roddy Marino,
Mike Caravana, Jeff Nicklas, Chase Monroe, and Kevin Pehlke (three
years). There were some other really good players who had one or two
very good years but not like we are seeing now.
