Excellent review. Pretty much takes all the fun out of this thread
though -- not much more to be said.
Except, I liked Mike Caravana growing up, and wonder how his numbers
stack up. Virginia was a second tier team then, as you note, and I
remember the hoos getting pounded by JHU at homewood... sometime
in the early 80's. Defenseman breaks his wooden stick over Mikes
back. Mike gets up, takes the good half of the stick, and nonchalantly
tosses it away, making the guy trot after it to pick it up take it off the
field.
He coached at my high school for one memorable year. My friends
from that team still do Caravana impersonations --
getchafockinassovadafockinbawl! Italians from Long island were pretty
scarce in western albemarle, and he taught us a lot of new ways to
cuss a guy out. We either hated him or loved him, usually both at the
same time.
Also from that era, or a bit later, Pete Sheehan -- I wore number 8 all
through high school. Pete was the guy. Cool as a cucumber. Glad to
see him noted in your monograph. Which again, serves as the last
word on the matter.
