that they wanted to keep? I get what you are saying and somewhat
agree-although i don't agree the Yanks are the only team who CAN
spend the money. IMO they are the team most willing to spend the
money. I also don't believe It all comes down to the money when signing
a player.Tex made the decision he was going to NY a month before the
bidding was over. His agent simply used the Red Sox to get a few
million more from the Yanks. He wouldn't have gone to Boston even if
they offered the same or more money. Again-the Yanks did not spend
an additional gazillion to sign CC,Tex and AJ-they dumped enough
salary from Giambi,Mussina, and Abreu to cover it and actually spent
10 mil less than they spent last yr to finish 3rd-when nobody had a
problem with their spending.
You could put in a salary cap and the Royals,Pirates etc would still
finish last every year because, in reality, they couldn't care less about
winning.Their owners will put a minor league team out there for 5 years
and try to break even until they sell for a hundred mil profit.Pohlad could
buy the Yanks and still have a billion dollars but its not important to him
to win titles. NFL has a cap but you still see the same
Pats,Steelers,Colts etc at or near the top every year. NBA -
Lakers,Celtics at or near the top every year. If we truly want parity lets
put in an absolute salary structure. Every team must pay 100 mil-
nobody can go over and nobody can go under. We'd never get the "in it
for the cash" owners to agree. Lastly folks should remember that when
Steinbrenner bought the Yanks the team sucked, the stadium was
decrepit, attendence was paltry, and he had another, more succesful
team, across town to compete with. He built the organization for the
long haul with his own money and poured profits back into his team
instead of pocketing them. Require every owner to do that and I'm fine
with a salary cap but I can't see leveling the playing field for owners who
don't truly want to play anyway.
